Nitro PDF Pro (opens in new tab) – now there’s a name that packs a powerful punch. Positioned as an essential tool for small businesses and individuals, the PDF editor includes a host of must-have features such as PDF conversions, e-signatures, OCR. Ideal for improving workflow efficiency and productivity within one tool.
Available for Windows and Mac, there is also a version of the PDF editor app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
Nitro PDF Pro 13: Pricing
- One-time purchase with volume licensing available
Nitro PDF Pro is multi-platform software aimed at small businesses and individuals. If you’re not a fan of subscription services (you know you’re in trouble when automakers start stepping up), and that’s what drives you to best adobe acrobat alternativesyou will immediately appreciate this PDF editor app: when you purchase a license, it is a one-time fee.
The downside is that it isn’t cheap and you have to pay for each device you want to use this software on. Whether you are a PDF editor for Mac or Windows, the price per license is the same: $180.
Interestingly, bulk discounts vary depending on your platform: with Windows, you can buy three and get one for free, or eight and get two for free. On the Mac, you get 20% off when you buy five licenses and 24% off for ten.
Why that is is a mystery. But an alternative to Creative cloud and other subscriptions are always welcome.
Nitro PDF Pro 13: Interface & Experience
- Clean and does not get in the way
Launch the software, open an existing PDF and the Nitro PDF Pro interface will be revealed to you.
The layout is quite clear and simple: all the tools you need are at the top, in a row with large icons representing the main tools, with a toolbar below, with additional tools (which are grayed out as the selected main tool that doesn’t) support that feature).
There is a sidebar on the left, which by default displays thumbnails of all pages of your PDFs, but you can change that to show other useful information like your notes or any attachments, among others.
- Interface & experience: 4/5
Nitro PDF Pro 13: Tools
- Pretty much everything you need to annotate and modify a PDF
The purpose of Nitro PDF Pro is to enable you to make changes to PDF documents, and it comes with all the tools you’d expect.
To take online collaboration, for example. You have many ways to leave notes on pages. There is a highlighting tool that allows you to highlight text in different colors. You’ll find four standard shades, with the option to create three custom shades if you wish. You can also underline, strikethrough, or add a squiggle under any part of the PDF you’re working on.
This is all very useful, but it can be difficult to convey exactly what changes you want to see with a bit of a highlighter and a few lines over the text. That’s where the Annotate tools come in.
Here are a variety of text boxes, from just a regular box to a comment, a thought bubble, a note (think of it as a folding post-it note), and a few others. More than enough to fill a PDF with as many comments as you need to get across to other team members what you want to change.
Editing the content of an existing PDF is of course also possible with the ‘Correct Text’ tool. Select a word, a sentence or several paragraphs and that tool will transform your selection into a changeable text box.
We ran into a problem with the PDFs we experimented with: converting one section to editable text affected line spacing, often causing the paragraph to overlap the next. We tried it with multiple PDFs. We ran into the same problem with each of them.
While there are many tools available to adjust text, such as change color, italicize, change alignment, etc., we couldn’t find one that changed line spacing. There are other competing software that better preserve the look of a document, such as: EaseUS PDF Editor.
Nitro PDF Pro 13: Create PDF
- Start from scratch and convert to other formats
Modifying PDFs is one thing, but like so many others, Nitro PDF Pro lets you create documents from scratch, using all the tools mentioned above, and more. This even includes building forms, something Adobe Acrobat may have difficulty presenting. This is a useful addition as you can stay within one app when working on all things PDF.
But people don’t always work within one PDF editor app, and that’s where Nitro’s format conversion comes into its own.
Just like similar PDF editing software – think Foxit PDF Editor or Readdle PDF Expert – Nitro PDF Pro can convert PDFs to other formats and vice versa.
However, it does not do this via a special ‘Convert’ command. Instead, the process is a lot more intuitive: should convert word to PDF? Go to File > Open, find it and Nitro will automatically convert it for you when opened in the software.
Nitro PDF Pro is compatible with a wide variety of file formats, including images. When it encounters a file with no selectable text in it, it will offer to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) process. Select the language the document is in and Nitro gets to work. We found the results very acceptable, and of course they can be edited.
If you need to convert a PDF to another format, go to File > Export. You have a few options at your disposal, such as Microsoft Office files – Nitro is easily one of the best PDF to Excel converters and PDF to PowerPoint Converters on the market. There’s also RTF, TXT, a handful of image formats, and PDF/A – which is used for archival purposes.
Of course, this isn’t all you can do with Nitro PDF Pro: there are other features, including being able to Merge PDFs together, from emails to text files to spreadsheets, and merge them into a single, searchable PDF), digital eSign documents and create tables of contents.

Shall I buy?
Buy it if…
You need a versatile PDF editor
Nitro PDF Pro gives you many tools you need to edit, annotate or even create a PDF document from scratch. You can feed documents directly from your scanner and the OCR capabilities are excellent. If you or your company often need to modify and annotate PDF documents, it might be worth downloading the free trial and trying it out.
Don’t buy it if…
You are an occasional user or your needs are simple
If your needs are simpler and you just want to browse a PDF, Nitro PDF Pro runs the risk of being over the top. It may also not be ideal if you want to edit the content of a PDF without changing the formatting, especially line spacing.
